SYD v WUN: Sydney vs. Western United Highlights- Dec 23, 2023

The A-league soccer men’s match between Sydney and Western United (SYD v WUN) was held today in Allianz Stadium, Sydney. Western United lost by 4-2 to Sydney FC in this exciting match.

Angus Thurgate scored a corner from Lachie Wales to give Western United an early lead in the fifth minute. However, Sydney equalized the score just before the half.

Sydney had a 3-1 lead just after the half with two goals from set pieces, which wounded United, but United wouldn’t give up and kept trying to score.

United had a chance to come back after Matthew Grimaldi scored his first A-League goal. But Sydney had the last say, adding a fourth goal in stoppage time to secure all three points.

Angus’s first goal for Western United was scored five minutes into the game. It set the United team up for early success in the first half of the SYD v WUN match match. He might never have an easier goal in his career as he finished off Lachie Wales’ deadly delivery from a corner by slipping at the back post.

Western United needed a quick start in the second half of the match. But Jack Rodwell of Sydney scored within two minutes of the restart hitting home at the back post from another corner after Heward-Belle had saved Gomes.

United had a huge chance to come back into the game when Penha put Wales through on goal. But Botic couldn’t score at the back post when Wales cut the ball back to him.

The longer United went without converting one of its chances, the more at ease Sydney became with taking the sting out of the game and seeing it out on home soil.

However, United was not going down without a fight. When a teenager Grimaldi came off the bench to make an immediate impact. He shot into the roof of the net from Josh Risdon’s cut-back for his first A-League goal.

Meanwhile, Sydney won in stoppage time when Joe Lolley shot beautifully into the top corner after the goal of Grimaldi. Luke Brattan passed the ball to Lolley who hit it into the top corner to complete the three-point play and won the match.
