Australia’s leading retailer Harvey Norman quit sponsorship of Australian Rugby following the dismissal of Hamish McLennan as chairman of Australian Rugby.

The removal of Hamish McLennan by Rugby Australia seems to have had an ongoing impact. Because Harvey Norman refused to extend a partnership made by the former chairman Hamish.

Following the resignation of Hamish McLennan as chairman, Harvey Norman has decided not to extend a significant sponsorship deal with Rugby Australia. The 2021 sponsorship deal was facilitated by Mr. Hamish’s personal friendship with Katie Page, the CEO of Harvey Norman.

Rugby Australia has appointed Wallaby Daniel as the new Chairman of the Rugby Australia League on November 20, 2023.

However, Harvey Norman’s chairperson, Gerry Harvey told the Sydney Morning Herald that it was a normal change in routine. He didn’t admit that Mr. Hamish’s exit was the reason that the sponsorship of RA ended.

As the Super Rugby competition’s naming rights expire on December 31, Harvey Norman has chosen not to extend their agreement. Harvey Norman has had these rights since 2021. Rugby Australia declared that it was looking for a new sponsor and confirmed the split of Harvey.

A Rugby Australia (RA) spokeswoman said RA wishes to thank Harvey Norman for its enthusiastic support of Rugby over the last three years. Right now, RA is looking for a replacement and is actively participating in discussions about it.

Following Harvey Norman’s decision to end its multimillion-dollar sponsorship of the code, former Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan referred to the board who removed him as “boneheads.”
