Excitement and tension have risen in Ashbourne town and preparations for the two-day annual Royal Shrovetide Football 2024 match have begun. People are also planning to watch the game between Up’ards and Down’ards on an unconventional football field.

Royal Shrovetide Football in Ashbourne town is one of the last big street football games in the United Kingdom. Everyone from the Ashbourne town may participate in the two-day annual football match.

The match lasts for eight hours period. The goals are three miles apart, unlike traditional football matches. There are around 500 people eating lunch before the game, and then the ball is thrown at Shaw Croft locality in Ashbourne town to begin the game.

Shrovetide has set Shaw Croft as the starting point of the match in 2023. David Calladine, a member of the Shrovetide Committee, is the guy who stands behind the pillar. He will turn up the ball and throw it into the crowd to begin Wednesday’s play on Feb 14, 2024.

Another committee member, John Tomlinson, will turn up the ball at 2 p.m. to start the match. Meanwhile, the players gather outside two pubs in Ashbourne. The Up’ards gather outside The Vaults in Market Place and the Down’ards in front of The Wheel in Compton for spirited speeches at 1:30 p.m.

Mick Betteridge and Barrie Greenwood play the Sgrovetide Anethem at Ashbourne Leisure Centre’s lunchtime event. Royal Shrovetide Football Match 2024 will take place today, Feb 13, 2024, and tomorrow, Feb 14, 2024. It has been played since the 12th century, the reign of King Henry.

The Ashbourne Shrovetide Committee began accepting applications last year for two lunches that will take place today and tomorrow before the beginning of the match. The lunch will take place shortly at the Ashbourne Leisure Centre.

The Up’ards team defeated opponent Down’ards and won by 1-0 in the Royal Shrovetide Football Match 2023 last year.
