UK PM Rishi Sunak cancels meeting with Greek PM Mitsotakis
UK Prime Minister (PM) Rishi Sunak cancels meeting with Greek Prime Minister PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the last minutes. The British and Greek governments have a diplomatic dispute over the Parthenon Sculptures generally known as Elgin Marbles.
This dispute refers to the claims of Greece that these marbles were stolen from the Parthenon temple by British ambassador Lord Elgin in the early nineteenth century. However, Britain denies this claim of Greece. For decades, the subject has been a source of friction between the two countries.
Why did Britain cancel the meeting with Greece?
The cancellation came just a day after Greek PM Kyriakos told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg that Britain should return the Elgin Marbles to Greece. Kyriakos compared having some of the Elgin Marbles in London and others in Athens was like ‘cutting the Mona Lisa in half’.

Mr. Kyriakos said that he is deeply disappointed by the sudden cancellation of the meeting with Rishi Sunak. He said those who are certain of the validity of their viewpoints and justice are never afraid to engage in constructive arguments and debate.

Furthermore, he said our perspectives on the Parthenon Sculptures are well-known. I had planned to discuss this topic with my British counterpart (Rishi). As well as other major global challenges such as the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, and the climate crisis.
He has rejected an alternative meeting with Britain’s deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden in response to the meeting cancellation with Rishi. According to sources associated with the Greek government, PM Kyriakos is baffled and annoyed at the cancellation of the meeting.
However, No.10 claims that Greece broke its promise to not raise the matter of Parthenon Sculptures during his visit to the UK. But the Greek PM while giving an interview to BBC on November 26, 2023, touched on this subject. So, It led to the cancellation of the meeting.
The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had to meet Rishi Sunak today in London. But No.10 canceled the meeting at the last minute. No.10 is the official residence of the British Prime Minister.
