Hillside Academy Endarasha fire outbreak killed 17 school students

A massive fire outbreak at Hillside Academy Endarasha has killed 17 school students and injured 14. Hillside Academy Endarsha is located in Kieni, Nyeri.

The tragic incident happened on September 5, 2024 night. Kenyan authorities reported 16 deaths at 7:30 a.m. on September 6, 2024. Eventually, one more student burned to death in the later part of the day. Some media report a death toll of 20 school students.

National Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed it while talking to Kenyan media reporters. She stated that 17 schoolchildren died while 14 sustained injuries.

The victims have been burnt so badly that they couldn’t be recognized. They fell victim to a brutal fire outbreak when they were staying at one of the dormitories of Hillside Academy Endarasha. Dormitories refer to residential places for students in educational institutions.

As a result of this fire, fifteen schoolchildren died instantly at the moment while one died on the way to the hospital. However, another school child died due to critical burnt injuries while receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

Kenyans have condemned this incident and expressed condolences to the victim’s families. It left them in shock at this inevitable happening to innocent school children. Some severely criticized the school administration and held them responsible for this tragic incident.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed condolences to the dead victim’s families. He wished for the speedy recovery of injured students. He called this incident “devastating.”

William also claimed to order relevant authorities to investigate this terrible incident. He also assured punishing people responsible for this incident.

Authorities have expressed concerns after thoroughly examining the incident place that they may find more burnt bodies. Hillside Academy Endrasha dormitory housed 156 students. Hence, it may result in more death toll and injuries, unfortunately.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director DCI John Onyango, Senior Assistant IG, Director Homicide Unit, and NPS Disaster Management Unit are on their way to Hillside Academy Endarasha.

The incident place has been preserved for the homicide team and other relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the fire outbreak. All response teams to disastrous incidents have reached Hillside Academy Endarasha to facilitate victims. They have also alerted parents and guardians of school students about fire incidents.
