Sonya Massey shooting by Deputy Sean Grayson angered Americans
The video showing the shooting of Black Woman Sonya Massey by Deputy Sean Grayson went viral on social media and angered Americans. The viral video sent shockwaves to America and other parts of the world.
This video emerged as the Illinois State Police released bodycam footage of the officers pointing their pistols at Sonya while yelling at her to put down a pot of boiling water.
Sonya reported that she thought someone had broken into her property when she called the police at her house in Springfield on July 6, 2024. Following that, two police officers including Deputy Sean and his ally reached her home.
They followed her while entering her home. A boiling pot was placed on the stove inside Sonya’s kitchen. The police officers requested her to remove the pot.
Deputy Sean said they don’t need free while they are here gesturing to a boiling pot. Afterward, Sonya went to remove the pot and they seemed to be laughing over the pot of steaming hot water.
Meanwhile, Sonya addressed Sean saying “She rebuked him in the name of Jesus.” Responding, Deputy Sean said to her “You better not or he swears to God he will shoot her in her face.” Then, he yelled at her to remove the pot while pulling out his revolver.
Sonya appeared to apologize and said, “Okay she is sorry.” However, Deputy Sean shot her and then seemed to ask his ally what else they did. All this incident was recorded on the bodycam of his ally officer (unnamed).
Sean was a Deputy at Sangamon County Sheriff whose Attorney’s Office removed him from his post following the shooting of Sonya Massey. They also arrested him while charged with a murder count.

They found Sean’s justification was not acceptable for shooting Sonya Massey. Sean stated he shot Sonya out of self-defense as she was about to throw boiling water at him.
Moreover, Sean’s body camera was not active at the incident time. It further raised suspicions about his intentions to murder Sonya.
Many Americans are relating this case to the often killing of Black Americans at the hands of law enforcement officials who get them white supremacists. They are participating in protests in honor of Sonya.
One such popular case is the killing of Black American-African George Flod by a white American police officer. Hence, the narrative behind Sonay’s murder is her black race has created hype since the shooting video went viral.
