North Korea fired 200 artillery shells at South Korea Island

North Korea has fired more than 200 artillery shells near the west coast toward the South Korea Yeonpyeong island. North Korea has fired these shells near the west coast towards the South Korea Yeonpyeong island. South Korea urged citizens to seek refuge on the island before conducting its live fire drills.

North Korea fired about 200 artillery shells between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. (GMT). However, the fired shells did not enter South Korean soil. Instead, they fall into the buffer zone between North and South Korea.

Lee Seong-jun is the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea. According to Lee, the attack caused no damage to their people or army. But he said it threatens peace on the Korean peninsula and raises tensions.

The shelling comes after North Korea warned that it was stockpiling weapons in preparation for a war that may break out any time on the peninsula.

South Korea has also advised the civilians on two adjoining islands Baengnyeong and Daecheong to seek refuge following the attacks of North Korea.

South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik said the start of artillery drills by North Korea inside the non-hostility zone this morning was an act of provocation. It threatens peace on the Korean peninsula and raises tensions.

Furthermore, Shin said their military must assume the readiness to wipe out the enemy completely. So, they wouldn’t dare another provocation and back up the pace through strength.

However, this attack is not the first one. Previously, North Korea fired artillery shells on Yeonpyeong Island numerous times in 2010. It resulted in the casualties of four civilians.

The latest attack comes months after North Korea canceled a military deal to improve relations with South Korea. The deal began to deteriorate after North Korea claimed to have successfully put a spy satellite into orbit in November. As a result, South Korea canceled the deal and said it would resume border conflicts.
