Kenya police arrested 8 suspects for kidnapping 2 South Koreans in Moyale
Kenya police arrested 8 suspects in the aftermath of the kidnapping of two South Korean missionaries in Moyale. It is a city situated on the border between Ethiopia and Kenya.
Senior security personnel gathered for an urgent security conference under the direction of Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli to brief on the kidnapping case.
It came in the aftermath of the August 12, 2024 incident when victim South Korean missionaries were residing at Odda Mission Secondary School. Meanwhile, two armed attackers invaded the building on August 12, 2024 night.
Early investigations show that Kenyan police conducted a raid at the incident place. However, suspects with victims escaped the scene on motorbikes down the Marsabit-Moyale Highway, towards Funanyatta while firing shots.
Afterward, an immediate multi-agency search and rescue operation was initiated against them. Following this operation, Kenya police arrested 8 suspects and six of those are nationals of Ethiopia on August 15, 2024. However, they couldn’t recover kidnapped South Korean missionaries.
They presented suspects before Moyale Principal Magistrate’s Court. It granted them a ten-day custody order to help with the ongoing investigation.
Security personnel found three cartridges at the crime scene which they later sent for ballistic examination to the DCI Forensic Lab. DCI refers to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Moyale MP Prof. Jaldesa Guyo Waqo and top security officials including GSU Commandant Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni visited the crime scene.
Anti-Terror Police Unit Director Mr. Said Kiprotich, Border Police Unit Commandant Issan Alimaa, and Acting Inspector General of Police Mr. Gilbert Masengeli were also present with them.
Gilbert urged Moyale residents to cooperate with multi-agency security teams during a briefing with regional and county security teams. He asked the local community to provide any information that could help resolve the kidnapping case. It will also help them secure the safe return of South Korean hostages.
