Fire at the ArcelorMittal mine in Kazakhstan kills more than dozens of people and many people are missing as a result of the fire outburst.
The fire blew up on the same day when Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered to stop the investment in steel giant ArcelorMittal company as he wanted it to be nationalized.
ArcelorMittal Termitau said that 23 out of 252 people who were working at the mine are still missing. ArcelorMittal Termitau is the local unit of the company in Kazakhstan.
Why Kazakh President order to stop investment in ArcelorMittal?
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that Arcelor Mittal has turned out to be the worst in our history from the point of view of cooperation with the government. He commented as he met with relatives of the victims in the Karaganda region where the fire incident occurred.
President Tokayev expressed condolences to the families of the victims and distanced his cabinet from ArcelorMittal. Moreover, he has called for “investment cooperation” to be stopped. The Kazakhstan government was finalizing a deal to nationalize the company.
According to Reuters World, at least 28 people have died and 18 are still missing after a fire outburst in ArcelorMittal mine.
Today’s mine fire is the second lethal incident in the last two months at the Kostenko mine. Four miners died after a fire broke out at the Karaganda mine in August this year. The steel and mining company ArcelorMittal operates these mines.
Five people died and four were hospitalized in November 2022 after a methane gas leak at Karaganda mine in the same area.
ArcelorMittal Temirtau runs the biggest steel mill in Kazakhstan. The steel giant owns fifteen coal and ore mines in Kazakhstan. It is also the world’s leading steel and mining company present in more than 60 countries. It is a Luxembourg-based multinational steel manufacturing corporation headquartered formed in 2006.
