Former Labor MP son Jack Fitzgibbon died at the age of 33

The son Jack Fitzgibbon of former defense minister and Labor Party MP Joel Fitzgibbon died 33-years-old age. He died in a parachuting accident at Air Force Base RAAF Richmond in Sydney.

Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon was a special forces soldier with the second Commando Regiment. He was conducting a normal training exercise when his parachute failed to land properly last night.

Jack participated in a routine military training drill at the RAAF base in Richmond, 50 kilometers northwest of Sydney last night around 6:30 p.m. when his parachute failed to release.

As a result, Jack suffered fatal injuries and authorities admitted him to Westmead Hospital in critical condition. However, former Labor MP son Jack Fitzgibbon could not survive his injuries and ultimately died.

The acting Special Operations Commander, Brigadier James Kidd confirmed Jack’s death news today in the afternoon. After the tragic incident, the Defence Department has suspended all parachuting activities and is investigating the event.

Brigadier James said it was too early to speculate on what happened in detail. Parachute demands a high level of repetition and confidence in processes and routines. They expect their parachutists to train frequently.

Furthermore, James stated he is a Special Forces-qualified parachutist. He knows directly how tough that specific military talent is. Hence, they want their paratroopers to meet the greatest standards.

The deceased father Joel Fitzgibbon was the defense minister during the government of Kevin Rudd from 2007 to 2009 until residing in 2022. Current Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that he was close friends with Joel Fitzgibbon and expressed his sympathies to the family.

Marles said whenever a serving member of the Defense Forces dies, their loved ones suffer. In this case, Joel Fitzgibbon, Jack’s father, is a good friend of mine. The friends of Joel are particularly affected by this tragic incident.
