Third German politician Franziska Giffey was attacked before elections

Third German politician and former Berlin mayor Franziska Giffey was attacked before the German European Parliament elections. She served as Governing Mayor of Berlin from December 2021 to April 2023.

After the violent attack, she had minor medical attention in a hospital. She also tweeted on X that she wishes they would all pay more attention to how they treat each other.

She stated respect and appreciation have become more important again. They work together to promote dialogue, compromises, and different perspectives on the world.

According to German Police, Franziska was at the library when the suspect approached her from behind. He used a bag filled with hard objects to strike her in the head and neck. However, they arrested a 74-year-old man on suspicion of hitting Franziska.

Authorities stated that they were looking into the attack’s motivation. They had previously been aware of the arrested suspect reading the state security and hate crimes.

However, German prosecutors were also debating whether to place the suspected man in psychiatric treatment as he might be mentally ill. They noticed some signs of mental illness in him.

This is the most recent in a series of attacks on German politicians. Franziska is a member of Scholaz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the current minister of state for economy in Berlin.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that violence had no place in a democratic speech. He called the attacks on politicians cowardly and ridiculous.

However, Franziska Giffey was the third attacked German politician after Matthias Ecke and Yvonne Mosler in just one week. Matthias is a lead SPD candidate whom four individuals attacked on May 3, 2024. Hence, he underwent surgery in the hospital.

Yvonne is a politician from the Green Party whom unknown people attacked along with a TV crew on May 9, 2024, in Dresden. However, the real motive behind attacks on German politicians is unclear.

Provincial police records show that there were 2,790 offenses in Germany against politicians in 2023. These numbers increased from 1,806 in the previous year.
