Shah Khawar became PCB Chairman after Zaka Ashraf resignation

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Election Commissioner Shah Khawar became the new Chairman of the cricket board after the resignation of Zaka Ashraf. Shah is also a Supreme Court lawyer.

However, Shah Khawar became interim Chairman of PCB. According to the PCB statement, Shah has been provided with the powers of the PCB Chairman under the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry’s notification and Article (72) of the PCB Constitution.

Mr Shah Khawar, Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Election Commissioner of PCB, has assumed charge as Chairman PCB.

The newly elected Shah Khawar thanked the PCB President and Interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq for lying trust in him. He stated his primary responsibility will be to hold the election of the PCB Chairman in a free and transparent manner.

A lot of changes are coming to the PCB in the next few weeks. Elections are likely to happen before Feb 8, 2024. This is because Interim PM Kakar named Mohsin Naqvin for the cricket organization’s Board of Governors (BOG).

This happened after PM Kakar accepted the resignation of Zaka Ashraf as head of the management committee. Zaka quit as head of the PCB last week. He joined the board of governors on July 6, 2018, and took over from Najam Sethi as Chairman on the same day.

Zaka stated that he was working for the betterment of cricket. But they can’t work this way. He said it during the ongoing meeting of the committee board. Afterward, he gave his resignation on Jan 20, 2024.

It all came up because the Pakistan Cricket Team failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup 2023 during Zaka’s tenure. Moreover, the Pakistani Team was eliminated from the World Cup 2023 before reaching the semifinal round.

Following his departure, PM Kakar nominated Mohsin Naqvi to look after the affairs of the management committee. Mohsin has also recently served as Interim Chief Minister of Punjab.

Meanwhile, Shah has been tasked with supervising the PCB business to facilitate the establishment of the BoG. He will also ensure a speedy and transparent election process. Hence, Clause 2 of Article 7 of the PCB constitution transfers all powers to the chief election commissioner. It happens in the case of a vacant Chairman position.
