Emma Navarro beat Elise Mertens to win first WTA title in Hobart
American Emma Navarro beat two-time winner Elise Mertens in a tennis match at the Hobart International to win her first WTA title. WTA refers to the Women’s Tennis Association.
Emma Navarro beat Elise Mertens by 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 score series at the International Hobart Tennis Tournament. The first match between Emma and the top Belgian player Elise went a tough 2 hours and 48 minutes. It was a big win for a rising career of Emma.
The first set was over in just 35 minutes. However, Elise Mertens fought back and beat Emma in the second set. She thought she would win the third set with a 5-4 lead but failed.
Emma was placed 149th in this position last year. Since then, she has risen to a career-high of 31st. She has also made it to the semi-finals in Auckland this month.

She has an 8-1 score going into the Australian Open. She will play Wang Xiyu of China in her first match there. Emma said she didn’t know if she could express her emotions. But it has been a lot of years in the making.
Furthermore, Emma said she thinks her coach and she have been together for eight years. It is crazy to think about how far they have come from the beginning. It was about six or seven years ago that she thought being a good college player would be enough for her. She believes being here is proof of how hard they both have worked.
However, Elise Mertens won the Hobart International title in 2017 and 2018. The Hobart International is a professional tennis tournament for women. It is held at the Hobart International Tennis Centre in Hobart, Australia. The tournament has been played since 1994.
