Dozens of flamingos died after being hit by plane in Mumbai

Dozens of flamingos died after an Emirates airplane hit them in Mumbai, western India. Environmentalists have raised concerns over a large number of deaths of flamingos.

An Emirates flight carrying more than 300 passengers hit the flamingos. Following the mishap, the flight made a safe landing. According to officials, it is still unclear whether the birds went off their normal path to get in the way of flight.

Local Indian media reported that the Emirates flight from Dubai to Mumbai hit flamingos while landing. All of the passengers and crew departed without any mishap after the airplane made a safe landing.

However, Indian authorities found flamingos dead late at night when some kids in the Mumbai district of Ghatkopar noticed bodies lying on the road. After that, local people informed wildlife officials that the flamingo’s dead bodies were lying over a distance of 500 meters.

A forest official, Amol Bhagwat, told the media they found around 29 bodies on Monday night and another 10 the next day. Meanwhile, volunteers and government workers were seen on TV picking up bloody bodies from the ground.

Indian environmentalists stated that the tragic incident might have happened because the birds had to change their path while they were flying towards a nearby refuge.

An environmental activist, Stalin D blamed power cables installed in the area. He said there was a possibility flamingos were trying to fly over these high-power lines. Meanwhile, they were trapped and hit by the plane.

Thousands of flamingos travel to Mumbai in November every year and spend a few months living in the wetlands there. Local people gather in larger numbers to admire beautiful pink guests, “flamingos,” and take pictures of them.

Hence, the incident of dozens of flamingos who died due to a plane hit led to more criticism of building projects near the coast of Mumbai. Environmentalists have expressed concerns for a long time about a planned airport in Navi Mumbai. It is another famous place for flamingos’ habitation.
