The famous Argentinian footballer, Lionel Messi appeared in the second half of the match when Argentina secured a 1-0 win over Paraguay. Otamendi’s early goal secured Argentina’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2023.

Argentina dominated the entire match, maintaining 75% possession throughout. They controlled the game from the very beginning, with Otamendi’s astonishing goal in the fourth minute.

Argentina had many opportunities to extend the lead after the early goal of Otamendi but the team couldn’t make it. Lautaro Martínez had a great chance to score in the 16th minute. But the goalkeeper Carlos Coronel from Paraguay succeeded in saving one of his three saves to keep out of goal.

Next, Nicolás González had an opportunity in the first half to beat Coronel but sent the ball wide of the goalpost in the 45th minute.

In the second half, Messi replaced Julián Álvarez. Otamendi offered him the captain’s armband, which he initially declined but later wore with a smile.

Messi came three times close to scoring in the second half. But his corner kick in the 76th minute bounced off the top left corner of the goal. After 15 minutes, the Paraguay keeper Coronel managed to block the shot from outside the box.

Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, set a new national record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, reaching 609 minutes.
