Twitter down across the world, Elon Musk’s X suffers global outage

Famous microblogging site X formerly known as Twitter went down today across the world as X users experienced a strange outage. The global outage of Twitter X took place in the early morning today Dec 21, 2023.

Users experienced Twitter down for more than an hour in the morning. The timelines in mobile apps did not refresh and on the web, a placeholder message appeared “Welcome to X! This is the best place to see what’s happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now”.

The global internet trackers Netblocks reported a significant international outage that was unrelated to any country-level blocks or filters. However, at about 1:35 a.m. (Eastern Time) the X timeline was restored.

It is important to note that it is still unclear what caused the problem for X outage globally. The strange thing was posting to the X continued to work even if the posts vanished after a refresh.

The accounts followed with notifications enabled continued to appear in that feed along with push notifications for new posts. Despite the inability to see new posts, New York Times reporter Ryan Mac hosted Space with over 800 people discussing the outage.

The blanked-out timelines also meant that accounts for Elon Musk, Support, or X CEO Linda Yaccarino couldn’t display any relevant information. The API Status page of services did not update to highlight any errors.

The reports of problems appear to have begun shortly before 12:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Down Detector. There is no indication of what triggered the outage or how long it may take for service to be restored.

This is not the only major outage in recent days. Another issue broke outgoing links for a couple of hours last week. The account email support responded simply with an automatic reply “Busy now, please check back later”.
