US Congressional Committee to conduct hearing on Pakistan election
A US Congressional Committee has announced to conduct a hearing on recently held elections in Pakistan on March 20, 2024. It came after concerns arising from the EU, US, UK, and Australia about the general elections transparency in Pakistan.
The hearing title is “Pakistan After the Elections: Examining the Future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan Relationship.
The announcement to conduct a hearing by the US Congressional Committee came after more than two dozen legislators of the Congress Party raised concerns about the fairness of the Feb 8, 2024 elections in Pakistan.
The general elections in Pakistan have become suspicious due to accusations of vote tampering. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan claims the new Pakistani government constituted by stealing their mandate.
Though Imran’s PTI-backed independent candidates won the most seats in the National Assembly, PML-N and PPP reached a post-election agreement.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif-led PMLN party and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-led PPP formed a coalition government last week.
Meanwhile, former US ambassador Donald Lu has been summoned to appear and present evidence before the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. He has to appear on March 20, 2024.

This is because the alleged involvement of Donald Lu in the cipher controversy makes his evidence more important regarding the claims of Imran Khan. This matter relates to the alleged cipher (secret diplomatic message). It describes a meeting between Donald Lu and Pakistani Ambassador Asad Majeed.
Imran Khan claimed Donald Lu threatened to overthrow his government in cipher during a March 2022 meeting with Asad Majeed. However, the United States has regularly denied these claims of Imran Khan.
However, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will also consider a resolution. The purpose is to express support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan on March 20, 2024.
