UK judges urged government to stop arms sales to Israel for Gaza

Three top former Supreme Court (SC) judges have urged the UK government to stop arms sales to Israel involved in the Gaza genocide. Arms sales refer to sales of military goods and services.

These judges joined more than 600 members of the British legal profession calling for the UK government to change policy against the Gaza genocide. British legal profession includes lawyers, legal experts, and former judges.

UK judges urged the government to stop facilitating Israel as it could make Britain complicit in the genocide of Gaza civilians. The judges along with lawyers wrote in a 17-page letter giving military aid and weapons to Israel may make the UK involved in genocide and serious violations of International Humanitarian Law.

According to the letter, standard international law recognizes the concept of aiding and assisting an International wrongful act. Three judges are Former Supreme Court president Lady Hale, justices Lord Sumption and Lord Wilson.

A former SC justice, Jonathan Sumption, also spoke about this issue to BBC Radio. He said he thought the UK government had forgotten how important it was to stop murder.

Jonathan stated framework of international law does not allow countries to act the way they want. It does not matter if they have been provoked or attacked.

Meanwhile, the lawyers brought up the fact the ICJ told Israel not to do anything that could be considered genocide. In addition, ICJ also raised concerns about famine in Gaza. ICJ refers to the International Court of Justice.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak refused calls to stop sales of arms to Israel. He said the UK has a careful licensing regime that it will keep following. But he faced great pressure already to cut ties with Israel for the sake of the Gaza people.

However, the recent killing of three British citizens among seven aid workers by Israeli airstrike in Gaza airstrike has put more political pressure on Rishi Sunak.

According to recent media reports, more than 3,000 Palestinians have died including a large number of children. Palestinian cities Gaza and Rafah are also facing great famine and food crises.
