Slapping therapy healer convicted after woman died in his workshop

An England court convicted a healer after he implemented slapping therapy as a healing technique on a woman who died. This conviction comes in the aftermath of the 2016 incident when a 71-year-old woman named Danielle Carr-Gomm died.

However, the slapping therapy healer was Hongchi Xiao, a 61-year-old man from California, United States. Danielle was suffering from Type 1 diabetes and quit using insulin after healer Hongchi proposed her slapping therapy as a “cure” for her diabetes.

Danielle had longstanding needle phobia which is mandatory when you inject insulin through a syringe. So, she usually explored other forms of treatment even though she required daily insulin to control her glucose levels.

Following her phobia, Danielle participated in a Paida Iajin workshop conducted by Hongchi in Bulgaria in 2016. Paida Iajin means “slapping and stretching.” It is the practice of slapping oneself and others to remove impurities from the body.

Danielle also attended another session by Hongchi at Cleeve House in Seend, Wiltshire, in October 2016. She said on the first day she was no longer taking her insulin. Meanwhile, Hongchi congratulated her on her choice.

She fasted with the other volunteers but fell extremely ill very quickly, feeling weak, tired, and yelling in pain by the third day. Eventually, she passed away from diabetic ketoacidosis on the fourth day.

Diabetic ketoacidosis happens when the body doesn’t have enough insulin to allow blood sugar to enter cells for energy. Afterward, Hongchi emphasized that he was not the organizer of the workshop. He was paid to lead this workshop.

Hence, he was not a professional physician and lacked medical expertise. So, he did not provide healthcare. The head of Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, Rosemary Ainsile said Hongchi neglected a diabetic woman who died from medical complications at his workshop.

Following this, Winchester Crown Court court based in England found slapping therapy healer Hongchi guilty and convicted him of manslaughter. It will sentence him on October 1, 2024. The conviction of manslaughter may sentence a guilty man to life imprisonment.
