Over 150 people arrested at NYU against pro-Palestinian protestors
New York Police have arrested over 150 people at New York University (NYU) against pro-Palestinian protestors in support of Gaza. It is part of nationwide pro-Palestinian protests expanded throughout university campuses.
The arrests came after school administrators requested help from the New York Police Department (NYPD) to clear a plaza on NYU’s Manhattan campus. Hence, they arrested over 150 people including students, staff, and other individuals on the campus of NYU.
According to NYPD, several protestors who had been arrested were still being examined through the night. They will release most of them. Just some days before NYU arrests, police arrested over 100 people at a protest at Columbia University. The majority of those arrested people were students.
Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October, there have been increasing protests at other universities, such as Yale University. Kaz stated Gould Plaza is a square outside the Stern School of Business at NYU. It had barriers around it but protestors smashed through them. NYU administrators asked NYPD to clear Gould Plaza but protestors refused to disperse and interfered with the community’s safety. Hence, their officers moved in and cleared the area.
Before arrests, the Global Campus Safety Department of NYU released a statement warning the hundreds of pro-Palestinian protestors. They warned if they did not leave the plaza, they would face consequences from the police.
Protestors are demanding that universities cut ties with firms that supply weapons to Israel involved in the massacre of the Gaza people. They chanted slogans “We will not stop, we will not rest. Disclose. Divest.
According to recent media reports, the death toll in Gaza has crossed 34000 as a result of fierce Israeli strikes on Gaza. The majority of affected people is women and children.
