Muslim MP Asaduddin Owaisi's slogan Jai Palestine created controversy

Indian Muslim parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi’s slogan “Jai Palestine” while taking oath as MP in Parliament created controversy. He raised this slogan to express solidarity with the war-torn territory of Palestine after taking the oath of office as a member of the Indian parliament.

However, his remarks have gained widespread criticism and backlash from several Indian politicians and the general public. This is because bilateral relationships between India and Israel have evolved over the past three decades.

Hence, the recent ongoing conflict in Palestine comes at the hands of Israel. However, India supports the Palestinian stance for peace and independent territory.

Hence, the different successive Indian governments always adopted a careful approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict to not affect its significant partnership with Israel like the recent government.

So, Muslim MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s unexpected slogan “Jai Palestine” welcomed backlash from several politicians, especially the ruling party BJP. His remarks supporting Palestine challenged the balanced approach of the Indian government towards the recent conflict.

Many parliamentarians severely protested in Lok Sabha until Radha Mohan Singh, presiding over the oath-taking ceremony intervened. Radha said his controversial slogan “Jai Palestine” will be removed from official records.

However, many BJP leaders have emphasized disqualifying MP Asaduddin Owais, a five-time MP from Hyderabad. He is also president of AIMIM (All India Majlis Ittehad ul Muslimeen).

Meanwhile, Hindu extremist lawyer Hari Shankar Jain also submitted a plea to Indian president Droupadi Murmu to cancel the membership of Asaduddin as a parliamentarian.

He entered this plea while citing Article 102 of the Indian Constitution suggesting no Indian parliament could show his devotion or adherence to parliament.

It is significant to note that lawyer Hari also presented the Hindu side in the 1993 Babri masjid case. However, MP Asaduddin defended himself claiming the Indian Constitution makes no mention of his remarks being offensive.

He also mentioned Indian founder Mahatma Gandhi. He urged Indian people to read about Gandhi why he mentioned the “Palestinian state” and what he said about it. The people of Palestine are an oppressed community.
