Manipur bridge damaged due to three blasts just days before elections

Three improvised explosive device (IED) blasts at around 12:45 a.m. damaged a bridge on National Highway 2 (NH2) in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

It came just days before the second phase of elections on April 26, 2024, for the Manipur constituency in India. Manipur constituency has 13 assembly constituencies.

Kangpokpi is a conflict-ridden region in Manipur. Video footage of the incident showed fractures and holes on the bridge that went viral on social media. It has slowed traffic flow.

Authorities have temporarily suspended traffic on the damaged Manipur bridge. It is a significant route that connects Nagaland’s Dimapur with Manipur’s capital Imphal under the current circumstances.

A police official stated they have increased security in the affected area under the condition of uncertainty. They have initiated search operations to find the culprits responsible for this incident.

The blast incident has resulted in no injuries or deaths. However, no group has taken responsibility for the blasts on the Manipur bridge.

According to Manipur Chief Electoral Officer, Pradeep Kumar Jha, they are aware of the IED explosion. However, since they organized elections in Kangpokpi district in the first phase of elections. Hence, it should not affect elections for the second phase on April 26, 2024.

Regarding the general elections of India on April 19, 2024, the first round of Manipur voting faced violence and damage to electronic voting machines (EVMs). Political parties also claimed tampering with votes for Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur Seats.

Following the disrupted voting system, re-election was conducted in 11 voting places for the Inner Manipur seat on April 22, 2024. So, the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared re-elections at 7 voting places in Imphal East District and four in Imphal West District.

However, the main contest is between two political parties Congress and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) candidates in the Inner Manipur constituency.
