Kenyan man sentenced in Australia for sexually abusing 83-year-old man
A court sentenced a 30-year-old Kenyan man James Ng’ang’a Irungu for sexually abusing an 83-year-old man suffering from dementia in Australia. James is a former caregiver for older people.
The court convicted him of three charges of committing indecent offenses with a victim man earlier this year. He moved to Australia as a Kenyan immigrant in 2023. He was studying at Edith Cowan University.
The horrible incident happened when James started working as a caregiver at an aged care facility based in Perth. According to law enforcement officials, James targeted an old man who was in a compromised mental state due to his Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.
He repeatedly forced the victim to touch him inappropriately by placing his hands inside his trousers. His acts were recorded on CCTV footage which the victim’s daughter reported to authorities.
However, James’ lawyer Tony Hager defended him saying his client had a complicated background. He suffered from significant personal and financial challenges when he arrived in Australia.
Tony also claimed James was struggling with his sexuality due to his existential crisis. He had kept his true feelings about his sexuality hidden for a long time. Now, after his actions became public in such a disturbing way, he feels deep shame and regret.

Judge Alan Sefton remarked James massively violated trust at a hearing in the District Court in Western Australia. His actions potentially affected the confidence of people in aged care facilities. He was in a position of care but committed acts that intensified betrayal.
Afterward, the Western Australia court sentenced the Kenyan man to three separate jail terms for three charges. It includes eight, twelve, and sixteen months for each immoral count. It resulted in a total effective sentence of 24 months.
However, Judge Alan allowed James the possibility of parole while noting that his visa status would likely result in deportation upon release. It is significant to note that an 84-year-old man has passed away.
