Katsina Govt imposed 24-hour curfew after 2 died in anti-govt protests
Govt of Katsina has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state after two people died yesterday in the protest movement to end bad governance. This decision came after Nigerians took to the streets on August 1, 2024, to begin a 10-day nationwide protest.
They launched this widespread protest movement to express their frustration over the persistent economic hardship of the country. Weak social and economic conditions, poor law and order, and collapsing leadership triggered these protests.
The protest started peacefully but quickly turned into violence which resulted in the death of two casualties. Some protestors also attacked churches, looted items, and destroyed properties in retaliation. Katsina police also used heavy tear gas shells to disperse crowds and baton-charged some protestors.
Many videos emerged on social media that showed how the situation went out of control in the aftermath of these protests. Katsina police also arrested 50 people involved in vandalism and looting items.
Mostly young Nigerians participated in anti-government movements to protest against difficulties such as an increase in the rate of unemployment and poverty.
It is significant to note that Nigeria is the sixth most populated country in the world but lacks resources in accordance with population. Corruption and lack of accountability are crucial factors in the country’s struggling economy.
Public services and infrastructure in Nigeria have also been declining. It has given rise to public perceptions of insensitivity and accountability on behalf of the government.
Following these growing concerns, youth organizations, opposition parties, and civil society organizations held anti-government protests.
They called for better leadership, governance accountability, transparency, economic reforms, and security. They also demanded the rule of law, strict state action against bandits and rebellion groups, and human rights.
So, the protest movement of Nigerians has changed dynamics throughout the country. The govt of different states including Katsina and Kano have imposed 24-hour curfew.
Hence, the hashtags “End Bad Governance” and “Tinubu Must Go” have become popular on social media as the campaign gained momentum.
The main demands of protestors are a reversal of fuel price increases, import taxes, and restoration of affordable electricity bills.
