Ethiopia landslides in Gofa killed 229 people
Two major landslides in the Gofa zone of Southern Ethiopia killed 229 people as rescue efforts continued into a second day. A landslide in the affected region of the Gofa zone of the Southern Ethiopian Regional State buried several individuals after a lot of rain on July 22, 2024.
Afterward, another massive landslide occurred on July 23, 2024. People who had gathered there to help earlier buried people under a previous landslide.
Markos Melese is head of the National Disaster Response Agency in the Gofa Zone. He informed the media that they are still digging and recovering bodies.
There were previous reports of 50 casualties including police officers and children as a result of a landslide on July 22, 2024.
The local government of Ethiopia released footage of individuals using shovels and their bare hands to remove dead bodies from the ground. At least 14,000 people have been affected.
Gofa district administrator Misikir Mitiku stated it was a very tragic incident. The number of casualties increased as rescuers got caught themselves in the trap.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his deep sorrow over the horrific death toll. He announced that government personnel had been sent in to lessen the disaster’s effects due to Ethiopia landslides in Gofa.
Meanwhile, African Union chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed condolences on X. They stand in solidarity with the people and Ethiopian Government as rescue efforts continue to find the missing persons and help the displaced people.

The Head of the World Health Organization in Ethiopia, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his condolences to all affected families. He announced the despatch of a WHO team to help with emergency medical requirements.
Workneh Gebeyehu is the executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. He also stated they encourage everyone to remain careful.
He also urged Ethiopians to take safety measures to save lives and prevent more tragedies. As the area continues to experience the severe effects of climate change
