Cyril Ramphosa reelected president of South Africa after DANC deal
Cyril Ramphosa has been reelected as president of South Africa for a second term in a last-minute DANC agreement between rival parties. Chief rival parties are ANC (African National Congress) and DA (Democratic Alliance).
After fighting against apartheid for decades, Cyril of the ANC party won the right to govern in 1994. Apartheid refers to the racist political and social system in South Africa.
However, Cyril’s party ANC, suffered a major setback in elections last month, losing the majority. Hence, it forced the DA party to spend two weeks in intense negotiations behind closed doors with other political parties.
Following these negotiations, DA leader John Steenhuisen said that their opposition party ANC had formally signed a governing agreement with it. This agreement included a provision that the new parliament would have reelected Cyril Ramphosa as president.
Hence, Cyril won his second presidential term in a secret ballot several hours during an extended parliamentary session. Several parliamentarians from DA and a few minor parties voted in favor of Cyril following the DANC deal.

Julius Malema was his opponent candidate for the presidential term in parliament, who received 44 votes in his favor. However, Cyril defeated him with massive votes of 283 by his fellow MPs. Julius is President of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Cyril also gave a victory speech after securing the win. He stated it was time for parties to overcome their differences and to work together.
Cyril also described the DANC deal as a new birth, a new era for South Africa. He also said this is what they are going to do. This is what he is committed to achieving as President. He is a 71-year-old politician, anti-apartheid activist, and president of the ANC party.
