Attack on Iraq military base injured at least five US personnel
According to media sources, an attack on military base Ain al-Assad in western Iraq injured at least five US personnel. This attack happened amidst rising tensions in the aftermath of the assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah members last week.
Iraqi security sources reportedly informed the media that two Katyusha rockets were fired towards the Ain al-Assad airbase. The rockets crashed inside the base.
One of the affected US personnel received critical injuries. Some media sources claimed seven US personnel sustained critical injuries including military members and civilians. One of the US officials reportedly stated base personnel are conducting post-attack damage.
However, it was unclear if Iran’s promises to take revenge for the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh had anything to do with this strike.
The assassination of the top political chief of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh last week in Tehran has greatly impacted geopolitical dynamics in the region.
Iran vowed to avenge his death in retaliation while attributing his assassination to Israel. However, Israel has not taken responsibility for this assassination despite Iran’s accusations.
Iran claims that the United States is responsible for the death of Ismail due to its unwavering support towards Israel. However, US Secretary of Defense Lyold Austin and Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallat agreed that the military base attack represents a “dangerous provocation” from Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas following its retaliatory threats.
Following this, the US has been carefully monitoring the response of Iran towards it and Israel. It has sent more military troops to the Middle East.
Other chief rivals of the US and Israel, Hezbollah and Hamas might have also possibly launched this aerial attack on Iraq military base.
Moreover, an Israeli strike on Beirut last week resulted in the killing of Hezbollah’s senior commander, Faud Shukir after Ismail. It furthered increased tensions in the Middle East.
