Al-Shabab killed at least 32 people in a Somalia beach attack
An Islamist militant organization Al-Shabab killed at least 32 people and injured several others in the Lido Beach attack in Somalia. Lido Beach is a well-liked tourist destination in Somalia.
Al-Shabab is an armed group with ties to Al-Qaeda. It claimed responsibility for the attack on Lido Beach through an affiliated radio station.
When a suicide bomber exploded himself at the Beach View Hotel’s entryway, several armed attackers attempted to hit the hotel at Lido Beach. They started shooting at unarmed civilians on the beach where many innocent residents were sitting or walking.
The initial death toll in the aftermath of the Al-Shabab attack was seven but later on it increased. Authorities in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, said a suicide bombing and gun attack by Al-Shabab on Lido beach killed at least 32 people.
Meanwhile, Somalian Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre expressed condolences on this incident. He ordered authorities to provide immediate help to victims. He called this attack “brutal” and “barbaric atrocity.”
Police spokesperson Abdifatah Adan Hassan informed media reporters about the death toll of 32 people and 63 injured civilians. He also claimed that security officials had killed all beach attackers on the spot.
However, they have arrested one of the attackers who was operating an explosives-filled vehicle. According to Abdifatah, one of their soldiers also died. Another soldier sustained critical injuries as a result of the beach attack.
One of the eyewitnesses, Mohamud Moalim reported when the attacker blew himself up near Beach View Hotel. He and his friends were at the beach hotel, some of them died and others received injuries.
Another witness reported everybody at the beach panicked. Nobody had any idea what was happening. This was because the shooting and bombing took place simultaneously.
This beach attack is a continuing series of fatal events by Al-Shabab to topple the weak Somalian government to dominate its power in the region. Al-Shabab has carried out several terrorist attacks and bombings for more than 17 years.
