Shakib Al Hasan filed in murder case with ousted PM Sheikh Hasina

Rafiqul Islam filed a murder case against Bangladeshi Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan with ousted PM Sheikh Hasina in fatal violent protests in the country. Shakib is an all-rounder for the Bangladesh Cricket Team.

Rafiqul Islam is the father of Rubel who was assassinated on August 7 amid continuing protests in Bangladesh. According to media reports, Rubel received fatal shots in the chest and abdomen while participating in a rally on Ring Road in Adabor.

After the shooting, he was rushed to hospital immediately, but he eventually passed away. Shakib is the 28th accused and Ferdous Ahmed is the 55th accused in Rubel’s murder case. Ferdous is a well-known actor in Bangladesh.

The deceased student’s father filed a murder case against Shakib Al Hasan at Adabor Police Station in Dhaka. Shakib and Ferdous were both previous members of parliament for the Awami League.

The complainant has also nominated ousted PM Sheikh Hasina among 154 accused people in a murder case. Apart from this, around 400-500 unnamed people are also facing murder charges.

Sheikh Hasina is the leader of the Awami League. She is the first president of Bangladesh and the fourth time Bangladesh Prime Minister.

However, this murder case comes as part of the dictatorial policies of Sheikh Hasina. It resulted in the casualties of hundreds of Bangladeshi student protestors in the beginning week of August. Overall, massive protests that started in July 2024 claimed the lives of three hundred people overall.

These protests erupted as the largest protest movement by Bangladesh students against the 2018 quota system by Hasina. Students protested to remove more than half the quota of 1971 war participants’ families for high-privileged civil positions.

According to them, this quota system compromised their chances to serve high cadre-services jobs and also violated general merit criteria.

However, Sheikh Hasina had to forcibly resign and escape the country in the aftermath of retaliation and violence prevailed against protesters.
