Shaheen Shah Afridi rejected vice-captaincy offer from PCB

Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has rejected the vice-captaincy offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the national team. The selection committee of PCB reportedly offered Shaheen to become vice-captain of the squad for the T-20 World Cup.

The Vice-captain performs the captain’s tasks when the actual captain is absent or unable to perform his job. Hence, Babar Azam is the captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team. And PCB offered Shaeen to become vice-president of Babar Azam.

Shaheen Afridi rejected offer to become vice-captain of Babar Azam for T-20 World Cup

This rejection came due to a historic captainship tussle between Babar and Shaheen. Following the national team’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year, Babar Azam resigned as all-format captain. Afterward, Shaheen Shah Afridi assumed captainship of the T20I squad.

However, Shaheen captained the team in only one International series during his brief time as Pakistan’s captain. This series was against New Zealand, who defeated Pakistan by 4-1 under the captainship of Shaheen.

Hence, the Pakistan Cricket Board decided to oust Shaheen and re-appoint Babar Azam as the team’s captain. According to PCB, their determination to efficiently control player workloads and maintain top performance levels was the main factor in their decision to remove Shaheen from the captaincy position.

PCB also stated that they have decided to re-appoint Babar Azam as the team’s captain with the collaboration of Shaheen. However, Shaheen distanced himself from this statement, and tensions rose between him, Babar, and PCB.

Following that, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi called Babar Azam and Shaheen to discuss this issue. The confusion that came from Shaheen’s stance on PCB’s statement ended after this meeting. After that, PCB released pictures of both shaking hands happily.

However, it seems Shaheen has not forgotten the snatched title of captainship from him by PCB, and it’s overhanding to Babar Azam again. It is most likely the reason, Shaheen Shah Afridi has rejected the vice-captaincy offer.

Following this rejection, PCB has also released a statement that they decided not to appoint the vice-captain of Babar Azam for the upcoming T-20 World Cup.
