Mob assaulted Christian man, burnt house over alleged Quran’s dishonor

A Muslim mob assaulted a Christian man and burnt his home for the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in Sargodha. The victim man was accused of burning the Holy Quran on May 24, 2024, in Mujahid Colony, Sargodha.

After his accused desecration of the Holy Quran, a mob beat that Christian man and attempted to kill him. The angry mob was also trying to break into the houses of other minority community members.

This incident happened when several colony members found burned pages close to the Christian family’s homes and an electric pole. Meanwhile, Sargodha Police intervened and rescued the victim, a Christian man along with two Christian families from an enraged mob.

Mob also assaulted intervened police officers who saved the victim man and other Christian families. Hours after the incident, Sargodha police filed an FIR against 350-450 unidentified armed men and women.

They filed this FIR under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including murder attempts, assaulting public officials performing their duty, and mischief by fire or explosive material with intent to destroy the house. They also included Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997 and 11WW (lynching) against the mob.

Sargodha Police have also identified and arrested 44 people for their alleged involvement in mob violence against a Christian man. Station House Officer (SHO) Shahid Iqbal submitted an FIR report in which he mentioned local people of Mujahid Colony became upset and gathered in front of the victim’s home.

According to FIR, the mob forcefully tried to break into the residence of the accused man using sticks, stones, and other weapons. They also set a nearby shoe factory on fire in an attempt to enter his home.

The mob also set fire to outdoor air conditioning units and electricity meters outside the accused home. However, the Sargodha Peace Committee, police, and other locals attempted to mediate a peaceful resolution with the mob (between 300-400). When they did not stop violent acts toward the Christian community, the police filed an FIR against them.
