Ford and Xcel Energy will build 30,000 EV charging ports

The companies Ford and Xcel Energy will build 30,000 electrical vehicle (EV) charging ports for fleeting businesses in Winston and Colorado. The companies will begin distributing these EV ports in other states after Winston and Colorado.

Ford believes that many businesses will be interested in electrifying their vehicles in the future. So, it is collaborating with Xcel Energy to provide 30,000 EV charging ports for fleets or vehicles of clients by 2030 at little to no cost to businesses.

How will Ford Pro and Xcel build mutual EV charging ports?

Ford Pro is the automaker’s commercial vehicle and software business which will manage the project. According to Amanda Rome, the initial EV charger installations will begin in two states Winston and Colorado in the first quarter of 2024. It will later expand to include more states.

Amanda is the executive vice president and chief customer officer of Xcel Energy. She said in a brief talk with reporters that we need everyone on board and thankfully Ford Pro agrees.

Xcel stated it would cover most of the upfront costs of the charging systems. Amanda predicted that customers would save up to $150,000 as a result of the program. Meanwhile, Ford will provide customers with a full suite of charging solutions. It includes management and software tools to enable commercial fleet owners to manage their charges.

Commercial EV sales are increasing somehow at a slower rate than passenger car sales. Ford sold 6,187 E-Transit vehicles up from 5,811 in 2022. In addition, the business sold 20,365 F-150 Lightning trucks in 2022. It shows an increase of 13, 258 over the previous year.

According to Cox Automotive, EVs accounted for just under 8% of all US vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2023. Commercial customers like passenger vehicles face several challenges including high costs and a lack of charging choices. Ford stated that it wants to help make EVs more appealing to commercial fleet owners by tackling these issues front-on.
