Islamabad High Court (IHC) today directs PTI Chairman Imran Khan to approach a special court against his jail trial in a cipher case.
This case is relevant to a diplomatic document (cipher) that went missing from the possession of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. In this regard, IHC has directed Khan to approach the special court regarding the in-prison trial of the cipher case.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) alleges that there was a threat inside the missing document from the United States to oust Imran Khan’s government.
Charges against Imran Khan
Khan sentenced to three years in jail in the Toshakhana case on Aug 5, 2023. He shifted to Attock jail but later on, IHC suspended his imprisonment. But he remained in prison because of his judicial remand in the cipher case. IHC said the concerns of Khan regarding security in jail trial of cipher case are valid.
IHC accepted the petition of Imran Khan to shift him from Attock jail to Adiala jail, Rawalpindi on September 25, 2023.
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted a charge sheet (challan) to the Special Court established under the Official Secrets Act. Both former Prime Minister Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi are guilty of these charges for missing cipher.
Khan has filed several petitions in the IHC. One of these involves staying his jail trial and bail in the cipher case. The other one is to suspend the Toshakhana verdict as well as against his charge in the cipher case.
IHC today discarded Khan’s plea against the holding of the cipher case in Adiala Jail. It directed Khan to approach the special court for this. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of IHC announced this verdict today. His verdict stated that the jail trial was in favor of the former premier regarding security-related matters. Justice Farooq observes no enmity proceedings in the matter of jail trial.
The Court order stated if the PTI Chairman has reservations about the jail trial, he may approach the Special Court.
