Two bird flu cases found in ducks in Alappuzha district, Kerala

Regional officials have found two cases of bird flu or Avian Influenza in ducks in the Alappuzha district, Kerala. Ducks raised in Ward 1 of Rdathva Grama Panchayat and another region in Ward 3 of Cheruthana Grama Panchayat have been verified to have this disease.

When medical officials analyzed duck samples with bird flu symptoms at a lab in Bhopal, the results showed birds had the avian influenza virus (H5N1).

After government officials found cases of bird flu in ducks, they followed a national action plan. District Collector presided over a meeting.

They decided to resolve the rising bird flu risk by killing and destroying domestic birds within a one-kilometer radius of the epicenter of Alappuzha district.

According to officials, the Animal Welfare Department will rapidly organize a Rapid Action Force and finalize relevant preparations. Moreover, the district administration stated that there was no reason to panic. And there was no chance of the illness spreading to others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses is the primary cause of avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Most of the influenza viruses that are affecting birds do not spread from birds to humans.

However, WHO stated human infection by a specific bird flu type High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. It poses a risk to public health. The H5N1 or HPAI virus can be 100 times worse than the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WHO issued a warning over the increasing number of new species that are being infected with H5N1 bird flu. It also includes humans, who have an extraordinarily high death rate.

Chief scientist Jeremy Farrar of the UN health agency told reporters in Geneva that bird flu remains a huge concern.

The recent bird flu outbreak began in 2020 and killed tens of millions of chickens. It has also infected terrestrial mammals and wild birds. The UN has recorded 463 human deaths from 889 bird flu cases in the last 15 months.
