Kenya govt urges parents to register their children to SHIF before school re-open

The govt of Kenya urges parents to register their children with the SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) Program before schools re-open. It requests parents register all of their school-age children as beneficiaries of SHIF.

The Kenyan government passed and implemented the Social Health Insurance Act 2023 on November 22, 2023. Principal Secretary for Education Belio Kipsang released an official statement advising parents to enroll their children in this program.

Belio claimed that the Social Health Authority on behalf of the government had created an improved benefits package keeping students in mind.

Every Kenyan child needs to be registered as a SHIF member. Hence, the govt of Kenya urges parents to register their children before the third term in schools begins on August 26, 2024.

How to apply for the SHIF Program?

  • Kenyan parents can register their children on portals sha.go.ke or afyangu.go.keas.
  • Or they can enroll all their school-going children by dialing *147#.
  • It is significant to note that it will be a registration manual.

The government launched a national SHIF registration campaign to speed up the implementation of universal health coverage on July 1, 2024.

The campaign emphasized its significance, especially for students while guaranteeing their access to health coverage under the Adu Afya package.

SHIF program aims to provide low-cost healthcare services with equality and quality to common Kenyans. However, all workers under this program will contribute 2.7% of their income to the fund.

In case, any Kenyan citizen cannot afford to contribute to SHIF funds, the government will bear his expenses. SHIF has replaced the NHIF Program, the oldest government health insurance scheme. However, Kenyans have given mixed reactions towards the SHIF initiative.
