Junior doctors begin four-day strike in Wales, UK

Thousands of junior doctors begin a four-day strike in Wales (Welsh) over their bitter salary dispute with the Welsh government. The 96-hour strike will be the longest in the continuing conflict with the government.

Dr. Oba Babs-Osibodu is co-chairman of BMA Cymru Wales (Welsh health council). He said it is sad and upsetting that they are back here for their third and longest strike.

Dr. Oba said they want to express that theY can call off strikes anytime. If the Welsh government puts forward a credible pay offer to form the basis of talks.

He also said that they continue to be devalued and ignored for their work in the health sector. Their determination to restore their salaries remains indecisive. Enough is Enough. In Wales, junior doctors start their careers at £16.65 per hour. Is this all they are worth?

Dr. Oba continued by saying junior doctors provide lifesaving care after training for years. However, they have taken up to £100,000 of debt.

Earlier, BMA Cymru Wales appealed to the new First Minister Vaughan Gething requesting to play his role in a salary dispute. This dispute began in December when 98% of junior doctors decided to strike to restore their salary after rejecting a 5% offer below inflation.

Mr Vaughan reappointed Cabinet Secretary for Health Eluned Morgan who stated they wish to address pay restoration ambitions. However, available funds have limited their offer. Hence, this situation comes with other health unions this year.

Eluned also stated they are not in such a position to offer more without additional funding from the United Kingdom recently.

Hence, around 3,000 junior doctors from Welsh hospitals and General practitioners begin the longest four-day strike upon the government’s failure to fulfill their demands.

However, the Welsh government said it worked with NHS (National Health Service) Wales and the BMA to protect patient safety while junior doctors were on strike.
