Illinois government provides hotel housing to migrants in Chicago
The government of Illinois government provides hotel housing and additional resources to hundreds of migrants in Chicago. Jay Robert Pritzker is the governor of Illinois who is facilitating these migrants.
According to a press release from Jay Robert’s office, the Illinois government has utilized additional resources to help migrants. It has given around 30 hotel rooms to migrants in need of accommodation.
Jay indicated that Illinois temporarily offers hotel rooms to safely shelter families. However, this action is in response to a recent wave of asylum-seeking migrants from Texas and at the request of Chicago.
He went on to say that it comes after the action of Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Greg allegedly transported an “unusual number” of migrants to Illinois in recent days with little cooperation or advanced notification. Therefore, the Illinois government provides hotel housing to a large number of migrants in Chicago who come from Texas.
The government of Texas launched Operation Lone Star in 2021 to handle illegal immigration. It sent hundreds of migrants to Chicago pursuing this operation. According to a press release from the Texas government, it has sent over 25,300 migrants to Chicago since Aug 2022.

Officials stated that money for the hotels will come from an additional $160 million committed by Jay Robert in November. Although Jay announced this fund to handle the ongoing humanitarian situation caused by asylum seekers in America.
Over 30,000 asylum seekers have entered from neighboring countries Mexico to the United States. However, the officials told Fox 32 Chicago that there are 14,554 residents in operational shelters. There are 312 total awaiting placement with 17 persons waiting at Chicago Police Department districts.
Furthermore, there are also 295 migrants waiting at O’Hare airport. However, six buses came on Dec 23, 2023, and four more were scheduled to arrive on Dec 24, 2023, to pick up the migrants from the airport.
