Hamza Yousaf to resign as Scotland’s first minister

There are reports that Scottish politician and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Hamza Yousaf is about to resign as Scotland’s first minister. He will likely make this announcement at a press conference today at noon.

It comes amid two votes of no-confidence motions at Holyrood following the breakdown of his power-sharing agreement with the Scottish Greens. Scottish Greens is another political party in Scotland.

Hamza Yousaf currently leads a minority government in Edinburgh. He fired some Greens politicians from office, after which the Greens joined forces with the opposition to expel him. Hamza sacked two Green politicians, Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater due to their policy disagreement with the SNP.

Greens have held talks with Hamza’s bitter rival, Alex Salmond of the Alba party to oust Hamza. The member of the Scottish parliament, Ash Regan left SNP in October 2023 and has to make the decisive vote and decide the fate of Hamza.

This week was the scheduled meeting between Ash Regan and Alex Salmond in this aspect. Hence, Hamza Yousaf is about to resign as Scotland’s first minister while feeling the wind waves against him.

Meanwhile, several influential SNP politicians have stated that this would disastrously affect the nationalist movement and the next election. According to one SNP MP, a no-confidence motion against Hamza Yousaf would do down like a cup of cold sick.

Hamza Yousaf also stated Alex Salmond would be dealing with the devil if he were to pull the strings behind the scenes. A motion of no confidence in Mr. Hamza’s ability to lead Scotland is up for voting. Another motion of no confidence in the whole Scottish government has also been placed.

In the case of Hamza Yousaf’s resignation, John Swinney is likely to become Scotland’s first minister. John is also a former deputy first minister and SNP politician.
