Dolton police chief Lewis Lacey indicted on bankruptcy fraud charges

A grand Federal jury in Chicago indicted the acting deputy chief of Dolton police, Lewis Lacey on charges of bankruptcy fraud. The charges against Lewis came from an alleged plot to hide assets and income from lenders and withhold payment of a lawsuit settlement.

A U.S. District Court in Chicago charged him on all accusations against him. The court observed that 61-year-old Lewis Lacey of Matteson committed offenses of bankruptcy fraud.

This indictment accused Lewis of filing several personal bankruptcy cases in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois from the 1980s to 2020.

All these cases allegedly contained materially false and fraudulent representations. Hence, it stopped the enforcement of a settlement agreement he had reached in a state court lawsuit in 2017.

According to the prosecution, Lewis filed for bankruptcy in 2019. Shortly after, a petitioner moved to enforce a settlement deal that accused Lewis of owing him $43,000 of a $55,000 settlement.

Authorities reported that Lewis lied in records and statements during his bankruptcy cases about being separated from his wife. He also wrongfully claimed that his wife did not live with him or help pay his monthly bills or mortgage.

They revealed in court Lewis was able to avoid paying the settlement by reporting a much lower amount of monthly income because he had made false statements.

Moreover, they revealed Lewis was working for the Dolton Police Department when his fraudulent scheme took place. He tried to cheat his lenders by making false statements in verbal statements and documents.

Following this, the U.S. District Court indicted Dolton police chief Lewis Lacey on nine charges of bankruptcy fraud. His other charges include making false claims and declarations in a bankruptcy case, and treason.

It is significant to note that Lewis Lacey could get up to five years in federal jail for each count if the court convict him.
