Cyclone Hidaya to hit Kenya, death toll rises due to heavy rains

Cyclone Hidaya is about to hit Kenya and Tanzania amid a high death toll of about 400 Kenyans due to floods and heavy rains. The already-existing heavy floods in Kenya and Tanzania have displaced tens of thousands of people.

According to the most recent meteorological forecast, Cyclone Hidaya is gradually approaching Kenya and Tanzania’s eastern coast. Kenya and Tanzania are both Eastern African countries at risk of catastrophic weather as Cyclone Hidaya will begin today and continue till May 6.

The Tanzania Red Cross Society also issued an alert about Cyclone Hidaya. It stated this cyclone would dominate and affect the weather patterns in the country, including heavy rains and strong winds in some regions near the Indian Ocean.

Tanzania and Kenya are located in the Indian Ocean which is the main reason for catastrophic floods in these countries. El Nino weather pattern is influencing the region triggering Cyclone Hidaya in both East African states.

Weather experts predict there are higher chances of more heavy rains in Kenya, especially in Mombasa. Mombasa is a significant coastal city in Kenya located just north of the cyclone’s center.

Office of Kenyan President William Ruto stated the coastal region is likely to experience Cyclone Hidaya. It will result in heavy rainfall, large waves, and strong winds that could affect marine activities in the Indian Ocean.

According to Ministry of Interior and National Administration figures, at least 210 people have died in Kenya as a result of flooding since March 2024. It stated heavy floods displaced 165,500 people, injured 125, and 90 went missing.

They have instructed residents living near 178 dams and water reservoirs in 33 states to evacuate quickly before Cyclone Hidaya hit Kenya.

The flood conditions will get worse due to Cyclone Hidaya in Kenya. The government of Kenya has issued high alerts to the public, advising them to stay vigilant.

The El Nino weather pattern is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon, associated with massive heat worldwide. It has intensified the rains, resulting in violent rains in some African regions and drought in others.

Landslides and flooding in Tanzania have taken the lives of at least 155 people in the last few days. Hence, the arrival of Cyclone Hidaya has increased concerns about weather disruption.
