Anti-government protests in Bangladesh killed over 90 people

In a fresh round of violence in Bangladesh, thousands of people participated in anti-government protests which resulted in the death of over 90 people. This massive protest movement happened in various parts of Bangladesh on August 4, 2024.

Thousands of young students turned to the streets to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her failure to abolish the controversial 2018 quota system.

This quota system reserves more than half of high-paid government jobs for certain groups including families of warriors who participated in the 1971 Independence War against Pakistan.

Massive Bangladeshi students demand this quota system removal as it undermines job opportunities for middle-class students in high-cadre services. Hence, they have been protesting for nearly a month since July 2024.

The government of Bangladesh has imposed a curfew in the country while suspending internet services to suppress this protest movement. However, a shocking and tragic turn came yesterday when thousands of students participated in anti-government protests in Bangladesh.

When police used heavy tear gas and threw grenades at protestors to disperse them. It resulted in violent confrontations between students and police which took the lives of more than 90 people. 13 of them were police officers.

Police and medical professionals announced the deaths in the capital city of Dhaka. The protest in the northern districts of Bogura, Pabna, and Rangpur also took the lives of several people.

Deaths were also reported in the eastern district of Magura and the western district of Comilla. The southern districts of Barisal and Feni also reported deaths in the aftermath of anti-government protests in Bangladesh.

These deadliest clashes have entered a more dangerous and civil disobedience phase after the deaths of nearly 100 people yesterday. Instead of remaining confined in homes, protesting students have called for a march today to Dhaka while committing bold disobedience to the nationwide curfew.

It is significant to note that roughly 300 people including yesterday’s death toll. The majority of dead people are protesting students.
