39 migrants dead after boat collapsed in Yemen

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that 39 migrants have been found dead after a boat collapsed in Yemen. This tragic incident happened on the coast of Yemen yesterday.

According to media reports, the migrants were Africans. Tens of thousands of migrants leave the Horn of Africa every year in an attempt to cross the Red Sea and reach the oil-rich Gulf countries. The Horn of Africa is also known as Somalia Peninsula, a region in East Africa.

Thousands of African migrants have died while traveling on the migration route to Yemen every year

The massive migration each year comes at part of poor Africans to escape violence, natural disasters, and fragile economic prospects. This recent tragic incident also happened as part of a series of African migrants traveling towards a stable future.

According to IOM, a boat carrying 260 migrants collapsed and after that, they found 39 people dead and 150 missing. However, 71 migrants fortunately survived. IOM did not specify the nationalities of dead migrants.

There are concerns that the death toll may rise as seventy people are still missing. Authorities are searching for them. However, the boat might have collapsed due to oversized passengers beyond its capacity.

In a separate incident, two boats off the coast of Djibouti sank a month before in April 2024. It killed dozens of migrants traveling on this boat.

The victims were 33 migrants belonging to Ethiopian country. IOM reported that about 1,350 people have died along the migration route, excluding this year since 2014.

It also claimed to have recorded at least 698 deaths along the migration sea route in 2023 only. However, around 105 migrants went missing. African migrants usually face new dangers to their safety by making their way to the Gulf nation by using the Yemen route.

The poorest nation in the Arabian Peninsula has been trapped in a civil war for ten years. Hence, many Africans are trying to travel to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Nations to find employment as domestic helpers or laborers.
