12-year-old Indian-American won 2024 National Spelling Bee Contest

12-year-old and seventh-grade Indian-American Bruhat Soma of Florida won the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee Contest in the United States. The National Spelling Bee Contest is a prestigious annual spelling competition in the US for students in grades 1 through 8.

This contest involves multiple rounds of spelling and vocabulary challenges. It ends when a speller spells correctly in a one-person, one-word round and is declared champion.

Bruhat Soma won this contest by correctly spelling twenty-nine words in the tie-breaker. He continued the trend of winning this famous competition while belonging to a young group from a small ethnic community.

This contest came to a tie-breaker, where Bruhat topped Faizan Zaki by successfully spelling 29 words in 90 seconds. Faizan had correctly spelled 20 words in a fast round.

“Abseil” was his championship word. Abseil means “to fall in mountaineering by looping a rope over a raised part of the rock.” When the tie-breaker came around, Bruhat went first. It looked like no one could beat him after 30 words.

The pace of Faizan was less stable at the beginning. He tried to say 25 words but mispronounced four out of them. It gave an advantage to Bruhat to win the contest championship.

Hence, Indian-American Bruhat Soma, the 12-year-old younger child, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 30, 2024. As a result, he received $50,000 in cash, among other rewards.

The contest organizers said Bruhat Soma is the ruler of words. They declared, “Bruhat Soma is the Champion of Scipps National Bee Spelling 2024.” They also stated the boy with incredible memory does not miss a word all week and wins the Scripps Cup.

According to organizers, Bruhat beat Harini Logan’s 2022 record by correctly spelling words out of 30 to win the 2024 Scripps Cup. Previously, Logan correctly spelled 22 out of 26 words in the inaugural spell-off competition.
