Turkey local elections: Ekrem Imamoglu defeated Tayyip Erdogan

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has defeated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a major blow in the local elections of Turkey. In local elections in Istanbul and Ankara, the main opposition party of Turkey, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) won.

This is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AK Party)’s worst loss in more than twenty years.

More than 95% of Istanbul’s voting boxes were open on March 31, 2024. Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said he had beaten the AK Party candidate for office by more than one million votes.

Mayor Ekrem addressed tens of thousands of followers late Sunday night. He stated those who don’t understand the nation’s message will lose in the end. Tonight, 16 million people in Istanbul sent a message to the president and our enemies.

In Ankara, the capital, CHP Mayor Mansur Yavas said that he beat his opponent. The result sent a clear message to those who rule this country. A third city in Turkey, Izmir, also went to the CHP.

According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, the CHP won in 36 of Turkey’s 81 provinces. They made gains in many AK Party areas. Supporters of the opposition met in Istanbul to celebrate the results. Tens of thousands of people lit torches and waved Turkish flags.

Tayyib Erdogan, who has been president of Turkey since 2002, said that his party had lost across the country in a speech from the rooftop of the presidential palace.

He also said that he would look at himself and fix any mistakes he found. They will also fix their mistakes and make up for their flaws.

Ekrem Imamoglu won the race to be mayor of Istanbul in 2019. Hence, this was Tayyib and the AK Party’s biggest loss in the polls up to that point. Tayyib was born and raised in the city and was mayor of it in the 1990s, so that loss hit close to home for him.

However, the local polls on Sunday were another setback for the president, who had hoped to take back control of those cities.
