Senegal Election results: Bassirou to become youngest president

Senegal election results show Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to become the youngest president of Senegal after being released from prison. According to Senegalese News Agency (APS), the constitutional council will declare the results on April 3, 2024.

Amadou Ba was his forerunner whom former prime minister and interim President Sall supported in the election campaign against Bassirou. Amadou and Senegal President Sall both admitted defeat based on the initial election result.

Senegal election results show Bassirou Diomaye Faye gained 53.7% and Amadou Ba received 36.2%. Hence, the Election Commission issued these results based on 90% voting of the polling stations in the first round vote.

Meanwhile, Bassirou appreciated his opponent Amadou and President Sall to accept defeat. He saluted the approach of other candidates who honored Senegalese tradition without waiting for the official results announcement in his victory speech.

Bassirou said congratulatory remarks of his opponents are powerful evidence of their excellence. He also pledged to reign with humility and fight corruption.

Bassirou also promised to deepen Africa’s political and economic unity and to be reliable with allies of Senegal in his speech. He assured the world community and its partners that Senegal will always uphold its obligations.

Moreover, he said Senegal would continue to be a friendly country and a secure and loyal ally for any partner who engages with them in virtuous, courteous, and mutually beneficial collaboration.

Bassirou’s victory in the Senegal election results showed youth anger with severe unemployment and concerns about the government in Senegal.

Bassirou was also an ally of Senegalese politician Ousmane Sonko who vowed to protect Senegal against corruption and outside intervention. The Senegalese government had arrested Ousmane and Bassirou for causing insurgency among the public.

However, the elections came after months of turmoil sparked by the arrests of Ousmane and Bassirou. Dozens of people died during protests and approximately 1,000 people faced imprisonment following politican’s arrest.
