Israel resumes war against a Palestinian militant group Hamas as hostages exchange truce expires between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced today that it has resumed its military operations against Hamas in Gaza. They accused Hamas of violating the seven-day ceasefire by firing toward Israeli territory.

Hamas violated the operational pause, and in addition, fired toward Israeli territory.

The seven-day pause in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas began on November 24, 2023, following the hostage exchange deal. This deal was extended twice which allowed the exchange of hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

The truce also allowed humanitarian aid into the shattered city Gaza Strip. Following this deal, Israelis released 240 Palestinian prisoners including children and women in exchange for 78 Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Qatar had played a major mediator role in fulfilling the deal from both sides. It is still trying to extend the deal to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Qatar confirmed the negotiations between Hamas and Israel for it.

Israel announced that it had launched a rocket fire in Gaza just an hour before the deal had come to an end at 7 a.m. As a result of a new Israeli airstrike, at least five people have been killed. The deceased people were in residential buildings in Rafah which is south of the Gaza Strip.

The restart of war comes a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s third visit to Israel since the war began on October 7, 2023. During his visit, he met with Israeli political and military authorities. He advocated the maintenance of the then-ongoing deal while emphasizing the safety of Gaza civilians.

Antony went to West Jerusalem and also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He discussed speeding up the process of supplying humanitarian aid to Gaza and maximizing the humanitarian ceasefire.

The recent ongoing war between Israel and Hamas is the worst ever in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. According to official media reports, more than 14,500 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli retaliatory strikes on Gaza.
