Notting Hill Carnival: Eight stabbed & 334 people arrests for civil misconduct
Eight people were stabbed and 334 arrests happened at the Notting Hill Carnival festival from Aug 25 to Aug 26, 2024. The Notting Hill Carnival event happens in London, United Kingdom.
This event is an annual street festival on the final weekend of August to celebrate Caribbean people’s culture, arts, and heritage. Massive uncivil misconduct and violence happened at this event. Eight people were stabbed during the celebration of this event.
Three people fell victim to a stabbing on August 25, 2024. One of those victims was a young mother who had a child. She was in critical condition.
However, the UK Metropolitan Police arrested 104 suspects on the first day of the event. But these arrests did not stop violence the very next day and five more stabbings happened. Two injured victims were in critical condition.
The second stabbing incident led UK police to arrest 230 more people. Overall, 324 people are in police custody on suspicion of stabbings on the closing day of Notting Hill Carnival.
However, they made most of the arrests for offenses of carrying an offensive weapon or drug offenses. Sexual misconduct, harassment, theft, and public disorder are also among those offenses. All these offenses led event to massive violence.
British Prime Minister Kier Starmer also expressed disappointment in the aftermath of Notting Hill Carnival violence. He stated this event showed weak spots in civil society.
The event has also raised concerns about civil misconduct by engaging in sexual activity in public. There are also reports of 8 rape cases and one acid attack at the event.
The police also recovered three firearms on August 26, 2024. Two firearms from the carnival and one from a vehicle in Harrow believed to be traveling to the event. Dozens of sexual assaults also happened at the event.
UK Met Police revealed that 50 police officers received injuries during the event to prevent misconduct and public disorder. The mob attacked police officers in retaliation to stop them. Notting Hill Carnival is the greatest community event in the world with millions of participants.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan was in charge of the policing operation. He passed a statement on August 26 to request the public to help them prevent more violence. Ade stated most people attend this festival to have a good time but this turned into intolerable violence.
