Paetongtarn Shinawatra became first-youngest Prime Minister of Thailand
Paetongtarn Shinawatra became Thailand’s first-youngest Prime Minister (PM after the ouster of Srethha Thavisin. The ruling coalition Pheu Thai party nominated her candidature for the premiership of Thailand.
Paetongtarn replaced Shretta who recently lost his position on August 13, 2024, due to a verdict made by a constitutional court in Bangkok. The youngest PM is a 37-year-old who is usually known by her nickname Ung Ing.
Paetogtarn is the youngest child of billionaire and former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She is the third family member to hold the position of prime minister following her father and aunt.
Her aunt and sister of Thaksin, Yingluck Shinawatra also served as Prime Minister of Thailand from 2011 to 2014. Yingluck was the first-ever Thai female prime minister whom the constitutional court ousted for abuse of power after serving for three years.
Similarly, recently ousted Prime Minister Srettha faced his dismissal by the court. His removal resulted in the aftermath of a long-running conflict between the military, pro-royalist establishment, and populist groups’ alliance with Thaksin.

Thaksin disrupted Thailand’s reserved and conventional politics when he became first elected prime minister in 2001. However, a military coup overthrew him from his position in 2006 and he lived in exile for fifteen years before arriving back in Thailand last year.
Regarding the recent development, the Pheu Thai party selected his daughter as the prime ministership candidate on August 14, 2024. No other coalition parties offered an alternative candidate for the Thai premiership. Hence, Paetongtarn Shinawatra became the first-youngest and 31st Thailand Prime Minister.
Paetongtarn helped manage the hotel division of the family business empire before entering politics three years ago. She has never been elected to public office before. She just gave birth two weeks before election day.
