Mumbai billboard collapse killed 14 and injured 74 people
A tragic incident of a billboard collapse during a strong thunderstorm in Mumbai killed 14 people and injured 74. This fatal incident happened in the Chheda Nagar area of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, on May 13, 2024 night.
The 120-foot billboard was opposite a Chheda Nagar petrol station. The thunderstorm was so strong that the billboard fell onto the petrol station and some houses below with terrifying force.
CCTV footage showed the metal structure of a billboard tearing through the roofs of several cars before crashing to the ground. A search and rescue mission is going on right now.
Two NDRF teams have arrived at the incident place to help the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other rescue teams. NDRF refers to (the National Disaster Response Force).
Indian Film Production Company Ego Media has put up a billboard that the Maharashtra government’s Police Housing Division has rented to the Police Welfare Corporation.
The four Ego Media billboards are on that rented property, one of which fell last night. However, the Mumbai police filed a case against the owner of Ego Media and other parties involved in the incident of the Mumbai billboard collapse.
Earlier, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP Railways) permitted Ego Media to construct all four billboards, including the fallen one. However, they allowed it without seeking permission or a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). BMC is the governing body of Mumbai.
Hence, BMC sent a letter to the ACP of the Railways Police and the Railway Commissioner to take down the billboards and cancel all permissions given by Railways. BMC sent this letter to prevent any unpleasant incident from happening like yesterday.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued urgent alerts against expected severe thunderstorms with heavy rains for Mumbai and other areas.
