Nigeria and DR Congo win through AFCON 2023 semi-finals
Nigeria defeated Angolo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR) defeated Guinea to win through semi-finals of AFCON 2023. Nigeria win with a single goal from Ademola Lookman.
Ademola is an Atalanta attacker and former England Under-21 international player. He scored a goal four minutes before halftime at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
Moses Simon got a pass on the left, sped past Kialonda Gaspar of Anglo, and drove into the spot when he turned the ball back for Ademola to score a goal.
That was enough for Nigeria to make it to their 15th Cup of Nations semi-final more than any other country. However, Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen scored with 25 minutes to go, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Victor is the reigning African Footballer of the Year.
Angola had a great chance to tie the game just before the hour mark around the same time. Angloan footballer Zini Aek was set up to score, but his shot hit the post.
Nigeria football team coach Jose Peseiro’s strategy to ensure Nigerians don’t give up goals has proven useful. It is because Nigeria has kept four straight wins against rival teams.
According to Coach Jose, Angola has a good team, but Nigerians did not give up. They scored one goal for the second time against Angola.
In the second game on Friday, DR Congo beat Guinea by 3-1 at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium in Abidjan. Guinea had won their first Cup of Nations knockout game and reached the last eight teams. They took the lead in the middle of the first half.
Guinea footballer Mohamed Bayo scored his goal from the penalty spot. However, Congolese footballer Chancel Mbemba scored a beautiful goal to tie the game before the half-hour mark. In the 65th minute, the Congolese took the lead with the penalty of Guinea.
Julian Jeanvier from Guinea stopped Congolese Silas Katompa in the box, while Yoane Wisa scored right away from the Congolese side. A stunning late free kick from Arthur Masuaka finally made DR Congo win by 3-0.
This was the first time since 2015 that DR Congo has made it to the semi-finals in AFCON. This way, Nigeria and DR Congo have secured the win to the semi-finals of AFCON 2023.
